Let our Raleigh, NC, dentist get you closer to a brilliant smile.teeth whitening

Sometimes your smile needs a little boost in order to bring back its vibrancy. Everything from the natural effects of aging to the foods and drinks we consume can take a toll on the whiteness of our smile. Our Raleigh, NC, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Ajamu Giscombe, knows that teeth whitening can be expensive and that some patients don’t want to sit in a dental chair for an hour or more when they can get awesome results from home.

There are two ways in which we can help you whiten your smile from the convenience and comfort of your own home. First, we can easily create custom whitening trays to fit your smile. Why choose custom whitening trays? If the trays are not fitted specifically for your mouth it can sometimes be a challenge to make sure that the gel is actually remaining in contact with your teeth and able to remove stains that are in more difficult spots such as between the teeth or near the gum line.

To make your whitening trays we will need to take impressions of your smile. It can take a week or two for your whitening trays to be ready, but then you can start your professional at-home teeth whitening treatment. Before you begin your treatment our Raleigh, NC, family dentist will provide you with instructions for how long to wear your trays each night. While many people will notice results within a week, if you have severe stains you may need several applications before noticing results. You can also continue to wear your trays every few months to maintain your beautiful results.

If you don’t want to wait to get custom whitening trays (perhaps you want a whiter smile for an important upcoming event) then you can also choose Opalescence Go, a professional at-home treatment that allows you to get a whiter smile without needing to wait for custom trays to be fabricated. The minute we give you your Opalescence Go whitening kit you are ready to start whitening. The trays are thin and comfortable, making it easy for anyone to wear. You can also choose the whitening gel strength that works best for you (10 percent or 15 percent hydrogen peroxide) based on your specific goals. In just a few days you’ll notice results.

Blue Ridge Dental Care is dedicated to helping you achieve that whiter smile conveniently and quickly in Raleigh, NC. If you want to learn more about our at-home teeth whitening system and whether it’s right for you, call our office today.

Your dentist at Raleigh, NC, knows his patients want to have better-looking smiles. For that reason, Dr. Ajamu Giscombe suggests dental veneersveneers. Veneers are used to resurface an individual's teeth, especially if they're damaged.

Here are some things veneers can help with:

  • Stained teeth or discolored, due to poor hygiene, drinking coffee and tea, smoking, chewing tobacco or using antibiotics containing tetracycline.

  • Mishappened teeth, such as:
    • Crooked teeth
    • Worn or chipped teeth
    • Irregularly shaped teeth
    • Uneven surfaces and spacing between teeth, like overcrowdedness.

When you come into the Raleigh office, your doctor will examine your teeth and assess whether veneers are right for you. If he decides it is, then any underlying issues, like cavities, will need to be resolved first. Your dentist will prepare the teeth by removing some enamel from the surface of your teeth. Then a model of your teeth will be sent to a lab where a custom set of veneers matching the color of your teeth will be made for you. When your veneers finally arrive, your dentist will then cement the veneers. Because your dentist removes some enamel, which is an irreversible process, and because veneers are made out of thin porcelain, you won't feel like your teeth are protruding. On the contrary, they will feel smooth, even and properly aligned with the rest of your teeth.

Other advantages to veneers, besides them concealing the faults mentioned above, is that veneers last longer than dental bondings and have an impressive color stability which makes them highly resistant to staining. So you'll be able to sip your tea or coffee without any worries.

In order to take proper care of your veneers, you need to brush twice a day and floss at least once before bed. It's important to prevent the buildup of plaque which may result in cavities and other serious issues.

DentalMagicTransformsSmiles

Magician Michel Grandinetti can levitate a 500-pound motorcycle, melt into a 7-foot-tall wall of solid steel, and make borrowed rings vanish and reappear baked inside bread. Yet the master illusionist admits to being in awe of the magic that dentists perform when it comes to transforming smiles. In fact, he told an interviewer that it’s “way more important magic than walking through a steel wall because you’re affecting people’s health… people’s confidence, and you’re really allowing people to… feel good about themselves.”

Michael speaks from experience. As a teenager, his own smile was enhanced through orthodontic treatment. Considering the career path he chose for himself — performing for multitudes both live and on TV — he calls wearing an orthodontic device (braces) to align his crooked teeth “life-changing.” He relies on his welcoming, slightly mischievous smile to welcome audiences and make the initial human connection.

A beautiful smile is definitely an asset regardless of whether you’re performing for thousands, passing another individual on a sidewalk or even, research suggests, interviewing for a job. Like Michael, however, some of us need a little help creating ours. If something about your teeth or gums is making you self-conscious and preventing you from smiling as broadly as you could be, we have plenty of solutions up our sleeve. Some of the most popular include:

  • Tooth Whitening. Professional whitening in the dental office achieves faster results than doing it yourself at home, but either approach can noticeably brighten your smile.
  • Bonding. A tooth-colored composite resin can be bonded to a tooth to replace missing tooth structure, such a chip.
  • Veneers. This is a hard, thin shell of tooth-colored material bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change its color, shape, size and/or length; mask dental imperfections like stains, cracks, or chips, and compensating for excessive gum tissue.
  • Crowns. Sometimes too much of a tooth is lost due to decay or trauma to support a veneer. Instead, capping it with a natural-looking porcelain crown can achieve the same types of improvements. A crown covers the entire tooth replacing more of its natural structure than a veneer does.

If you would like more information about ways in which you can transform your smile, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more about the techniques mentioned above by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Teeth Whitening,” “Repairing Chipped Teeth,” and “Porcelain Crowns & Veneers.”

SpiceUpYourTeeth

As a member of the best-selling pop group Spice Girls, Mel C (AKA Sporty Spice) enjoyed her share of musical superstardom. At the band’s peak in the Nineties, the young singer’s signature look featured baggy sweatpants, an assortment of tattoos, a nose stud and a gold-capped incisor, front and center in her mouth. Today, Melanie Chisholm is still singing — but now she’s a mom, an amateur triathlete… and that gold tooth is just a memory. Not only that, her smile looks more evenly spaced and whiter than it did when she was referred to as the “tomboy” of the group.

What happened? In our view, it all boils down to changing tastes — plus a little bit of help from dental professionals. As the “wannabe” singer proves, there’s no single standard when it comes to making your teeth look their best. Your own look is unique to you — and your smile can reflect that individuality.

For example, crowns (caps) are substantial coverings that may be placed on teeth when they are being restored. They are available in three types: gold, all-porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The latter two are tooth-colored, while the gold is — well, shiny like gold bling. Which one is right for you? In many cases, it’s your choice.

Likewise, dental veneers — wafer-thin shells that can correct cosmetic issues by covering the surface of your teeth — can be made in a variety of shades. Their hues may range from natural ivory to Hollywood white, and everything in between. What’s the best color for you? Only you can say.

Some people opt for a “smile makeover” that uses small irregularities in the spacing and color of teeth to create a more “natural” look. Other folks want a perfectly even, brilliant white smile that dazzles the eye. Still others are looking to match or restore the smile they once had — perhaps even re-creating a signature gap between the teeth. As long as there are no other dental issues involved, the choice is yours.

So if you’re unhappy with your smile — or if you feel it doesn’t reflect the person you “wannabe” — why not talk to us about a smile makeover? Just call our office to schedule a consultation. You can learn more about this topic in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”
