Are you worried about dental pain? Please, don't wait. A root canal procedure from Blue Ridge Dental Care in Raleigh, NC, could solve that problem and save your tooth. Your dentist, Dr. Ajamu Giscombe, has the diagnostic and treatment skills you need for pain relief and a healthy smile.

A lesson on tooth structure

When you look at a tooth, you see its enamel, the hard outer surface which supports your tooth, gives it the color and makes it functional. Under that calcified layer is yellow dentin, and interior to that is soft pulp composed of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.

In each root, you find a narrow chamber, or canal, which contains more of this soft pulp. The pulp is a target of inflammation and bacteria due to:

  • Decay
  • Abscess
  • Traumatic damage (a large crack or chip)
  • Several fillings

If the pulp becomes diseased, your tooth can function without it. It's the job of your Raleigh, NC, dentist to exam it and determine if the pulp may be extracted and the tooth saved. That's the whole point of the restorative treatment we call root canal therapy.

The root canal procedure

Dr. Giscombe does both the evaluation and the treatment right in his Raleigh, NC, office. Your dentist inspects your problem tooth and X-rays it to visualize the roots and jaw bone. Then he can decide how to treat it.

If he recommends a root canal, don't worry. The procedure happens with local anesthetic and is no more difficult than a deep filling. Dr. Giscombe surrounds the tooth with a protective dam and proceeds to access each of the root canals.

Then, he removes the pulp with a series of metal files, cleans and disinfects each canal and seals it with rubbery gutta-percha. A temporary cap covers and protects the tooth over the next week or two. When you return to the office, the dentist takes off the temporary cap and places a lifelike crown.
